Digital Sculpture

Digital Sculpture

2009 is the year I started picking up 3D and Zbrush.

3D and Digital sculpture allowed me to kickstart a career spanning 15 years along the film industry, videogames and miniatures. I had the opportunity to sculpt iconic characters and memorable 3D assets for Marvel, Disney and Blockbuster Hollywood films. In 2020 I created the Digital Clay project to kickstart a new digital sculpture manifesto and teach people this beautiful form of art.

Echoes of 2020

Released in 2020 on Makersplace, Echoes marks my exploration of the NFT space. I sculpted, modeled and rendered this series as a digital monument to our shared resilience during global upheaval.

Sketches

Starting in Zbrush, my process is centered around the immediacy and raw power of facial expressions. Some pieces are completely improvised while others follow specific references. They're all informed by my study of form, anatomy and proportions.

The Process

I usually start with a custom Zbrush toolkit I created, the Digital Clay Essentials. I spent months designing a set of custom brushes, lights, materials and render presets that emulate the behaviour, look and feel of real clay. The toolkit has 1k+ downloads on Gumroad. The ongoing creative process is illustrated in my Youtube channel, Digital Clay, in greater detail.
